Remote Access

Remote Access allows you to access files on your administrative network drive from a BRCC classroom or lab or home.  You will need to read the Remote Access Policy, sign and return the Terminal Server Remote Access Request Form to ICS to authorize your account for remote access.

Virtual Private Network

You will need to use Cisco Systems VPN Client to establish the connection to the network.  The software is installed on all the computers on campus.  If you want to install a copy on your home computer*, you can request a copy from ICS.

*Important: Installing the Cisco VPN client removes Window Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) from your computer. If you use ICS to share your connection with other computers at home, or used ICS to configure file sharing between your computers at home you should not use the VPN client.

Remote Access Instructions

Remote access requires two steps.  You will use VPN to establish a connection to the BRCC network and then use Window's Remote Desktop to connect to a terminal server to access your network drive and BRCC software programs.

Step 1: Connect to the BRCC Network with VPN

  1. Select Start -> (All) Programs -> Cisco Systems VPN Client -> VPN client
  2. Double-click on the BRCC line, or click on BRCC and then click Connect.
    Notes for home users:
    1. Home users with high speed access (cable or DSL) may get better results by using “BRCC with NAT” instead of BRCC. Try the regular BRCC entry first. If that connects, but Remote Desktop doesn’t work, try “BRCC with NAT.”
    2. The VPN client also works with 56k modems, but requires patience.
    3. Your computer must be connected to the Internet before the VPN client will work.
    4. Once the VPN client connects, it will ONLY allow traffic to go through the VPN client. If you want to use the browser or email program on your local computer you will have to disconnect the VPN. (This is to prevent an intruder that attacks your computer from the internet from using your computer as a conduit into the BRCC network.)
    5. The line “BRCC Wireless (On-Campus)” only works when your wireless laptop is connected to BRCC’s wireless network while you are physically at BRCC’s main campus.
  3. When prompted, enter your administrative network user name (brxxxxx) and password.
  4. A window will appear that notifies you that your connection has been established.  Click OK to continue and the VPN client will minimize.

Step 2: Connect to the Terminal Server

  1. Select Start ->(All) Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection
  2. Enter terminal.brcc.edu in the computer field and click connect.
  3. Log in to the terminal server using the BRCC domain, network username (brcc\brxxxxx) and password.
  4. The Terminal Server desktop will appear with a network login message that shows your drives.  Note: You will not be mapped to your default network campus printer through remote access.  If you wish to print, you will need to select a printer.
  5. Access your F: drive by opening My Computer
  6. You will have access to the Microsoft Office 2003 suite, Internet browsers, and SAM XP in the Start Menu.

Configure Outlook in the Terminal Server

The first time you access the terminal service, click on Start>All Programs>Load Outlook Profile On First Use to configure Outlook.  If you wish to manually configure Outlook, you can also use the following instructions the first time you access Outlook through the terminal server.
