Blue Ridge Community College
Acceptable Use Policy for Web Publishing
Content
Content on published pages should conform to the purpose,
goals, and mission of the College, individual department or
organization, and/or to each user's authorized job duties.
In addition, all content must comply with BRCC’s Web Privacy
Policy and Copyright Policy as well as other VCCS, state and
federal policies as appropriate.
Accessibility
Effective January 4, 2006, the Commonwealth of Virginia
requires that all new Web pages developed or procured must meet
the accessibility requirements of Section 508 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended and WAI WCAG Version 1
Level A requirements. Web authors should work towards bringing
existing pages into compliance with these standards. Links to
the text-only version of the Website should be added to each
subsite’s home page.
Advertising
State policy precludes the use of the college’s computing
resources for commercial, non-mission-related purposes. Web
pages, therefore, cannot contain advertising for which the
college has received payment or gifts in exchange for space on a
Web page.
Links can be made to commercial vendors in the following
situations:
- Licensed software that is required for viewing a Web
page,
- The vendor is contracted to provide a service to the
College,
- The link is displayed in recognition of sponsorship or
support of mission-related activities/programs
- The link is provided for educational purposes
Links provided to commercial, external sites for educational
purposes must not include endorsements and must have a
disclaimer that states that providing external links does not
constitute an endorsement of the company or its services.
