Blue Ridge Community College
Acceptable Use Policy for Web Publishing

Content

Content on published pages should conform to the purpose, goals, and mission of the College, individual department or organization, and/or to each user's authorized job duties.

In addition, all content must comply with BRCC’s Web Privacy Policy and Copyright Policy as well as other VCCS, state and federal policies as appropriate.

Accessibility

Effective January 4, 2006, the Commonwealth of Virginia requires that all new Web pages developed or procured must meet the accessibility requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended and WAI WCAG Version 1 Level A requirements. Web authors should work towards bringing existing pages into compliance with these standards. Links to the text-only version of the Website should be added to each subsite’s home page.

Advertising

State policy precludes the use of the college’s computing resources for commercial, non-mission-related purposes. Web pages, therefore, cannot contain advertising for which the college has received payment or gifts in exchange for space on a Web page.

Links can be made to commercial vendors in the following situations:

  • Licensed software that is required for viewing a Web page,
  • The vendor is contracted to provide a service to the College,
  • The link is displayed in recognition of sponsorship or support of mission-related activities/programs
  • The link is provided for educational purposes

Links provided to commercial, external sites for educational purposes must not include endorsements and must have a disclaimer that states that providing external links does not constitute an endorsement of the company or its services.

Publishing Guidelines

The College's Public Website (www.brcc.edu)

This site contains all official College information that is appropriate for distribution to the general public. The College's Web Designer/Developer is responsible for the administration, content, navigation, and design of the site. Publishing to this site requires a Web account and FrontPage. The Web Designer/Developer will provide support and resources to individuals publishing official information to ensure consistency of navigation and design throughout the site. Departmental sites should link to information published elsewhere on the College’s Web site instead of duplicating. This will ensure that all official information is up-to-date and correct.

Academic and Instructional Support Websites (www1.brcc.edu)

This site contains instructional content, support materials, and information about the college’s academic programs. The College's Web Designer/Developer is responsible for the administration of the site and the support of its publishers. Publishing to this site requires a BRCC academic account, FrontPage account and software.

The College's Intranet (www2.brcc.edu)

This site contains information and resources intended for internal distribution only. This site is password-protected and can only be accessed using Internet Explorer. College personnel can access the site by using their administrative account. The College's Web Designer/Developer is responsible for the administration, content, navigation, and design of the site. Individuals wishing to publish on this site must have a BRCC administrative account, FrontPage account and software.

Student Club Websites

Student organizations may request a WordPress account for publishing information under the supervision of their advisors. Faculty advisors may request contributor level accounts for students to upload approved content. All sites must meet the requirements of the Acceptable Use Policy for Internet Publishing.
