BRCC Snapshots
Ellen Coon
What began as a way to meet other students grew into a network of social and academic support for BRCC student Ellen Coon. A counselor suggested that Ellen join the Transfer Learning Community, and the rest, is history. “I absolutely loved it! I consider it a GREAT introduction to college, especially for freshmen, because it focused on bringing the students together as peers instead of just individuals in an English class, or a Math class,” explained the 19-year-old Churchville native.
Small class sizes at BRCC, coupled with the Learning Community curriculum, enabled Ellen to get the most from her studies and to benefit from her instructors. “Mrs. Eller has been the best math professor I could have hoped for! She is so dedicated to her kids in the class room, as well as attentive and understanding. She has an excellent way of conveying the class material.”
Like most BRCC students, Ellen has commitments beyond the classroom. One of her three part-time jobs is working at the BRCC Coffee Corner. In addition to studying and working, she has been an active member of Blue Ridge Christian Fellowship. She commented, “It has been so nice to have a community of Christian friends at BRCC, and to have the opportunity to meet every week for discussion, fellowship, prayer and Bible study. Being involved has made my year at Blue Ridge a VERY good experience.”
Ellen plans to transfer to Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee, and eventually get her master’s degree in occupational therapy.
