Karl Murphy
After
working a summer in the Irish version of Wal-Mart, Karl Murphy decided it
was time for a change. The Dublin, Ireland, resident filled out an
application for Camp Leaders USA, and “ended up in the US, to experience the
best summer of my life, as I was promised.”
During his summers at Camp Horizons, Karl is an adventure counselor, living with the campers in a cabin and leading them in activities like low and high ropes, caving, mountain biking, overnight trips, and rock climbing. In the camp’s off-season he works in the Outdoor Learning Center, which specializes in group team-building and leadership education experiences. He describes his specific role as a facilitator who helps, “make the group’s experience memorable.” As a result of his time at Camp Horizons, he became interested in studying “in a country and a place (Virginia) that I am in love with.”
Currently, he’s pursing an associate’s degree in the college/university transfer program at BRCC, and is enrolled in the College’s Leadership Learning Community.
After transferring, and perhaps even earning a master’s degree, Karl is thinking about a career as, “a life coach/success coach or a consultant of some sort of business.” He added that whatever he does, it will involve, “working with people to help them develop to their full potential.”
